Earlier this year, Google shut down its cloud gaming platform Stadia, but it’s yet to give up its exploration of online games. Recently, YouTube started rolling out a new online gaming service called Playables to some users.
Playables lets users to play various games directly on YouTube without downloading or installing. The service is currently in beta. Also, just few users can see the Playables section on the YouTube homepage. YouTube confirmed the existence of the service on its help page and said it has been testing it since September 5.
The Playables is a bit similar to the Google Play Store’s Instant Apps function. Both allow users to experience different Android games and apps. However, Playables provides complete games, not just demo versions. Also, Playables are cross-platform and accessible from both desktop browsers and mobile devices.
YouTube has historically liked to test its experimental features by randomly selecting users and markets. However, the scope and timing of the Playables test have not yet been disclosed.
How To Check If You Can Test Playables
As earlier stated, only a few users are scheduled to test the Playables beta. Of course, since it is in beta, the company will not do a wide rollout. This is the way most brands in the industry handle betas. To know if you can participate in the beta testing, follow the steps below
- Step 1: Log into YouTube with your Google account
- Step 2: Look for the Playables feature on their device
- Step 3: Click on the playable feature if you have it
Please note that if you do not see the playable feature, then you are not selected to test the feature. It is, however, important to note that this does not mean that Playables will be fully launched. This is because YouTube often cuts off some experimental features, such as the termination of YouTube Stories in June this year.
