With the recent directive passed by Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to telecom providers to block sim cards that are not duly linked with National Identification Number (NIN), it will be paramount to check if your SIM is well linked with your NIN, so that you won’t fall victim.
It’s no longer news that MTN Nigeria and others have issued statement that phone lines that are yet to be linked with NIN will be barred from using the network as from February 28, 2024.

How to Check NIN Status on MTN
There are two ways to check if NIN has been linked to your MTN line; either via the provided ussd code or with help of MTNNG mobile application.
USSD method
- Dial *996#
- Select option 4 (View NIN status)
- Press 1 to check the status.
- You will receive an SMS upon request.

Code To Check NIN Status on GLO
- To see if your GLO line and your NIN are connected,
- Dial *996#
- Select 1 (check the NIN status)
Your NIN status—whether it is linked or not—will appear on your phone’s display.
How to Check NIN Status On 9mobile
The following steps can be taken by 9mobile customers to see if their NIN has been linked and verified:
- Dial *996#
- Press 1 (check NIN status)
You will receive a confirmation message after checking to let you know whether or not your NIN has been linked.
Check NIN Status On Airtel
- Dial *548#
- Input your 11 digit NIN number and send it.
On submission, you will receive a confirmation SMS that states vividly that either your NIN has been linked to your line or not. If the sim you are checking the status for is a new sim card, you will as well receive a message that your NIN was used to register that number.
With this article, you should be able to know if your line will be block by February next year or not.
