Audi is finding its way to the EV market as it is back in the game with plans for an electric R8 supercar, signaling the company’s commitment to high-performance electric vehicles (EVs). Oliver Hoffmann, who leads Audi’s Technical Development, recently hinted at a third-generation R8, built on Volkswagen Group’s upcoming Scalable Systems Platform (SSP).

Why does this matter? Audi aims to cease production of combustion-engine models by 2025 and go all-electric from 2026. The SSP platform will be crucial for this, expected to underpin 80% of the VW Group’s future EVs. While exact details are scarce, Hoffmann confirmed that work on the new R8 has already started.

But before the R8 hits the road, Audi has other priorities. The company will first release the Q6 E-Tron in 2024, developed on a shared architecture with Porsche called the Premium Platform Electric (PPE).

Porsche, Audi’s sibling under the VW umbrella, is also developing a high-performance EV—codenamed K1. This electric SUV is slated for later this decade and aims to redefine performance and interior luxury. Porsche’s Mission X concept also teases a future electric supercar.
