Following the announcement of Windows 11 in late June, Microsoft has now disclosed that the new version of its operating system will officially be rolling out on October 5.

Windows 11 hints at October release date

The update will begin rolling out to eligible devices starting on that day as a free upgrade. The update will first be available for newer devices before becoming available for older ones. Depending on your device, it may take weeks or even months before the update becomes available for you. We should also see new PCs announced after the release date run Windows 11 out of the box.

Microsoft expects all eligible devices to be offered the free upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022.

Windows 11 key features

Microsoft highlighted several key features that will be available in the new OS:

  1. New design and sounds.
  2. New Start menu puts content at the center of the desktop and shows recent files from the cloud and Microsoft 365.
  3. Snap Layouts, Snap Groups, and Desktops provide more multitasking options.
  4. Chat from Microsoft Teams is integrated into the taskbar.
  5. Widgets, a new personalized feed powered by AI, promises a faster way to access the information you need.
  6. Enhanced gaming with DirectX12 Ultimate, DirectStorage, and Auto HDR.
  7. Rebuilt Microsoft Store.
  8. Accessibility improvements built for and by people with disabilities.
  9. New opportunities for developers and creators with the Microsoft Store, and new developer tools.
  10. Optimizations for speed, efficiency, and better experiences with touch, digital pen, and voice input.

Windows 11 will also support Android applications through a partnership with Amazon and Intel. However, this feature won’t be available at launch. A preview of this feature will be made available to Windows Insiders over the coming months.

To join this programme and try Windows 11 out early, navigate to Settings > Windows Update and choose “Windows Insider Program” to opt-in. The update will then become available to you under the Windows Update tab.
