TCL is known for its televisions, but it is also trying to make a name for itself in the budget-focused smartphone market with more 40 series smartphones.
Last month, it released the Ion X with a microSD card slot, a removable battery, and other features. In 2022, the TCL TAB 10 5G was launched. At MWC 2023, TCL unveiled three new smartphones, two new tablets, and a new pair of earbuds.

TCL Expands 40 Series of Smartphones
TCL has added two new 5G phones – the TCL 40 X 5G and the TCL 40 XE 5G – to its 40 series of smartphones, which was unveiled at CES this year. The only non-5G option is the TCL 40 XL.
TCL 40 Series Specifications and Features
- Display: Both the TCL 40 X 5G and the 40 XE 5G feature 6.56-inch HD+ screens and 90Hz refresh rate, while the 40 XL has a larger 6.75-inch HD+ display.
- Processor: The 5G phones come with MediaTek’s Dimensity 700 SoC and the 40 XL has the MediaTek Helio G37 chipset.
- Storage: The 40 XL gets 128GB of storage, and all three have 4GB of RAM and a microSD card slot.
- Cameras: The TCL 40 X 5G and the 40 XL feature a 50MP primary camera with two 2MP lenses for macro and depth functions, while the 40 XE 5G has a 13MP main sensor with the same macro and depth cameras. All three phones have an 8MP front camera.
The 40X 5G and 40XL both feature side-mounted fingerprint scanners and face unlock. Additionally, the 4G-only has dual speakers and more. All three phones have 5,000mAh batteries, potentially running on Android 12.
TCL 406
The TCL 406 costs $120, $10 less than the 408. Where does the saving come from? The camera – the new model has a 13MP sensor, down from 50MP. It still runs full Android and it even comes with the newer 13 version out of the box.
Other than that, the two phones are quite similar. They have 6.6” HD+ displays, stereo speakers and 5,000mAh batteries.
Note that TCL also has the 405 and 403 phones, but those are Android Go Edition devices, so we can’t compare them directly to the other two. That said, the 405 hardware is pretty similar to the 406, the main limiting factor here is the RAM capacity.
The TCL 406 will become available in Europe immediately and will expand to other regions soon.
TCL’s New Earbuds
TCL’s new MOVEAUDIO Neo ANC earbuds offer four pre-set EQ modes, and they also provide up to 25 decibels of bass-boosted sound. The earbuds can run for 7 hours, and the charging case and earbuds combined provide up to 40 hours of use.
TCL 40 Series Price and Availability
The TCL 40 X 5G and TCL 40 XE 5G will be available from June, while the TCL 40 XL 4G will be available from May this year.
