Qualcomm Launches Snapdragon 690 Chipset With 5G, Wi-Fi 6 Support
Qualcomm has announced it first 6-series Snapdragon mobile chipset with support for 5G connectivity. The major highlights of the new processor includes support up to 120Hz refresh rate screen, 4K HDR video capture, an all-new X51 5G modem and more.
Features Of Snapdragon 690
As earlier mentioned, the new Snapdragon 690 SoC is the first 6 series SoC to support up to 120Hz display refresh rates. It also supports HDR10, HDR10+ with 10-bit color displays and Rec2020 Color gamut. Other features includes Qualcomm’s Aqstic audio codec and Quick Charge 4.0+ which debuted on the Nubia Z17.
At the base, the new Snapdragon 690 SoC is fabricated using Samsung’s 8nm LLP process. This means it has slightly lesser
It has two Kryo 560 cores based on the ARM’s newer A-77 cores clocked at 2.0GHz. This is expected to give a 20% boost in performance compared to older Snapdragon 675 but still, the SoC will be slightly underpowered as the 730 and 730G are clocked at higher 2.3GHz.
The remaining six cores of the eight-core CPU are based on A-55 clocked at 1.7GHz. As for memory support, it supports LPDDR4x with a maximum size of 8GB RAM.
Affordable 5G And Other Connectivity Features
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 690 SoC is the first 6 series of processors to support 5G connectivity. The company has made this possible by using a newer X51 5G Modem. This modem which is integrated will give download speeds of up to 2.5Gbps and 660Mbps. This could make it fall just below the X52 and X55 modems found on the Snapdragon 765 and 855 SoCs respectively.
Talking about connectivity, it supports sub-6GHz and with the help of 4xMIMO technology, it has a bandwidth of up to 100MHz. It also supports both NSA/SA 5G networks with support for TDD and FDD in addition to Dynamic Spectrum Sharing.
The new SoC with the help of Fast Connect 6200 connectivity system will support Bluetooth 5.1 with Qualcomm’s AptX codec support and WiFi-6 ready standard. However, it also supports lower WiFi standards like the WiFi-5 and below. Other features include India’s NavIC, dual-frequency GNSS, GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou.
New AI and Camera capabilities
Qualcomm’s 5th Generation AI has Hexagon 692 DSP. This when combined with Qualcomm’s Sensing Hub and Hexagon Tensor Accelerator will power smarter devices like voice, camera, security devices. The AI performance will have a 70% boost in performance compared to older Snapdragon 675 SoC.
The highlight of all is the new Image Signal Processor. It brings first ever 4K HDR video capture and bokeh mode for 6 series of processors. It supports cameras up to 192MP. Other features include 1080p 240fps slow-motion video, support for HDR 10 and HEIF and HEVC image and video coding formats.
