It was a very special day for YouTube yesterday as It marked exactly 15 years since the first video was posted on the platform. The video was just an 18-second short film shot at the San Diego Zoo in California, shared online by Jawed Karim on April 23, 2005, one of the site’s co-founders. You will see the young man for a few seconds with an elephant appearing behind him.

And ever since then the platform has grown amazingly. Every month, two billion people connect to it and one billion hours of video are viewed daily. By registering, on February 14, 2005, the domain name YouTube.com, Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim, three former PayPal employees, certainly never imagined to see such success acquired by their baby.

Since Google took over the YouTube platform the following year, it has since interfered in people’s daily lives. The streaming site has participated in global excitement.

“Me at the zoo” now has more than 90 million views, but the platform’s records are in the billions, like the songs “Despacito” (6.7 billion views), “Baby Shark Dance “(5.1 billion) or” Gangnam Style “(3.5 billion).

It is worth noting that YouTube has generated nearly $5 billion in ad revenue in the fourth quarter of last year. On the other hand, Google bought the website in 2006 for $1.65 billion.

On an annual basis, Google says YouTube made $15 billion last year and contributed roughly 10 percent to all Google revenue. Those figures make YouTube’s ad business nearly one fifth the size of Facebook’s. In addition to and more than six times larger than all of Amazon-owned Twitch.

Overall, Alphabet made $46 billion in revenue in the quarter that ended December 31, 2019. It’s a 17 percent jump over 2018. Nearly $10.7 billion of that was profit, the company says. But alongside YouTube ad revenue, Google is also disclosing the financial performance of its cloud computing division. Google Cloud made $2.6 billion in revenue for the quarter, the report reveals.
