It was just some days ago that Corning launched Gorilla Glass 6, the latest version of their screen protection glass, with much assurance of protection from crack when it drops. And now Samsung Display Company has launched an “unbreakable” flexible OLED screen technology they developed. This is for sure going to get Gorilla Glass, Dinorex Glass, Dragontrail Glass and other display protection brands worried.
The company developed developed the component for smartphones and has been certified by UL – Underwriters Laboratories that works for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) of the US Department of Labor.
According to its press release, the unbreakable display passed the real-time durability test based on military standards set by the US Department of Defense.
“the fortified plastic window is especially suitable for smartphones […] because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass,” said Hojung Kim, General Manager at Samsung Display.
The Korean Company will also use the durable OLED panel for automobile consoles, mobile military devices, portable game consoles and tablet PCs for learning.
The testing, carried by UL, was a series of drops. The first test was 26 drops from 1.2 meters, followed by high and low temperature tests (between 71 degrees and -32 degrees Celsius). The panel continued to function normally “with no damage to its front, sides or edges.”
Later it was dropped from 1.8 meters, more than the US military ever required from its licensing companies, but the panel was still operational with no sign of damage.
