At Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018, Vivo announced and show-off a concept smartphone named Vivo Apex. It was a very interesting device in the sense that it had a 91% screen-to-body-ratio, had an in-display fingerprint sensor, and a pop-up selfie camera. The Vivo Apex smartphone was a typical James Bond gadget.

But a concept is a concept, and what would be the use of drooling over it? We have seen several concept devices that failed tosee the light of the day, so we moved on and looked the other way. At least, I did. But now, Vivo has announced at an event in China that the Apex will be produced and sold to the public in either late 2018 or 2019.

Now, that is a great news, but not so great news because we will have to wait till the end of the year or all the way till 2019. That is a long time to wait for any smartphone. Plus, chances are that some other manufacturers will jump in and hit the market with a copy of it before the Apex arrives. Oh, well.

What Do We Know About Vivo Apex

Let’s scan through what the Apex will bring to the table.

  • Looking at the Vivo Apex, you see a smartphone that is almost 100% glass in front and very minimal bezels. There is no selfie camera to be seen, because it is hidden away at the top end of the device and pops up when needed. So, instead of a notch to mess up the top edge of the display, Vivo has given us a pop-up selfie camera. Cool.
  • It has a 5.99-inch bezel-less display. Because the selfie camera pops up, there is no need for a notch or to reserve any bezel at the top of the display. The Apex has a 91% screen-to-body ratio.
  • The bottom half of the screen is a fingerprint scanner. So, it has no fingerprint scanner at the back or below the display.
  • Moreover, the Apex is equipped with Screen SoundCasting Technology, meaning the display can work as a speaker using vibrations.

Other specifications are not available yet, but we can expect a Snapdragon 845 processor to power the Vivo Apex.

The Vivo Apex will be king of the bezel-less village when it hits the streets if no other manufacturer manages to beat it to the starting blocks by then. It will feature the highest screen-to-body ratio in the world. But besides the bezel-less aspect, this is a truly intriguing device that I am looking forward to seeing.

Vivo was the first to demonstrate an in-display fingerprint scanner and also the first to announce a phone, Vivo X20 Plus UD, so equipped for the market.
