If you’ve logged into Facebook over the past few days, you’d probably seen a note from the social network about expanding its facial recognition features. The social network giant quietly released this new feature that will automatically allow you to know when you appear in a photo or video, even if you weren’t actually tagged in the first place.

However, as good as this feature is, it could be irritating to some people and that’s the reason why this post is existing. For those who doesn’t want to to use the new features, here’s a guide for you. It’s pretty easy to opt out of Facebook’s face recognition.

To disable face recognition on mobile:

Step 1: Go to your profile and click ‘More,’ on the right, under your profile photo. The face recognition settings are hidden in the “more” section of your profile

Go to your profile and click More

Step 2: Click ‘View Privacy Shortcuts’

Click View Privacy Shortcuts

Step 3: Then click ‘More Settings’

Click More Settings

Step 4: Click ‘Face Recognition’. In “more settings,” you’ll find the the menu for “face recognition”

Step 5: Facebook offers a quick explainer about why they use face recognition. Click on the question under that, ‘Do you want Facebook to be able to recognize you in photos and videos?’

Step 6: Toggle face recognition from ‘Yes’ to ‘No’. This switches face recognition from “yes” to “no” and you’re all done

If you’re using a desktop, the process is similar, but slightly different. To disable face recognition from desktop:

Step 1: Click the down arrow on the menu bar at the top of Facebook.  There are hidden menus behind the down arrow in the blue at the top of Facebook

Click the down arrow on the menu bar

Step 2: Click ‘Settings’

Step 3: In the list, click ‘Face Recognition’.

Click on Face recognition

Step 4: In the face-recognition screen, click ‘Edit’. This is where you can edit your face recognition preferences.

In the face recognition screen click Edit

Step 5: Toggle the feature from ‘Yes’ to ‘No’.

Toggle the feature from Yes to No.

And that’s it. It’s pretty straight forward. The setting can be turned on and off at anytime, so if you decide that you’d like to turn face recognition back on at a later time, you can.
